At Mod Mama, we try to work with designers and manufacturers who are eco-friendly and use fair labor practices. We like work with smaller boutique designers who have personal connections to their manufacturing and to the shops that carry their lines. We have met most of the designers we carry and love being able to give customer feedback to them.
Made in the U.S. - We love stuff that's made locally, often by mom-designers! Many of our favorite lines are made in the U.S. (Giddy Giddy, Wonderboy, Maple Landmark Toys, Rocket 10).
Organics - We carry a range of products made with organic textiles and with fair trade labor (Feather Baby, Krawlers, Petunia, Rocket 10)
Recycled Materials - Some or our lines use alternative materials, recycled products and natural finishes that have less impact on the earth. (Fleurville, Kickypants, Hatley, Plan Toys)
Safety: On the heels of dramatic toy recalls last year, Mod Mama is even more committed to ensuring toy safety in the products we sell. We are also interested in reducing waste from plastic toys so we offer lots of sustainably harvested wooden toys with natural finishes. Each of our toy manufacturers has submitted their safety testing protocols to us and has met all applicable toy safety standards. No toy that we carry has ever been recalled.
Education: Mod Mama selects toys that let kids build their imaginative and creative potential. As a result, you won't find battery-operated toys with lots of overstimulating lights and buzzers here. Rather than spending time in the virtual reality of a video game, we say - give a kid a beautiful wooden compass from Haba and let her really explore!
Our baby toys are selected to have great sensory components (crunching sounds, mirrors, bright and contrasting colors) and are beautiful pieces that intended to last and be passed down.
Practicality Meets High Design
We definitely try to have the chicest, most modern pieces being designed today! However, life with kids is tough on stuff, and we test each new product to make sure it is not just beautiful, but also highly functional. We carry a beautiful array of slings - but we've said no to those that were dry clean only (have they met a baby?). Our diaper bags are gorgeous, true - but they also have all the bells and whistles you need to organize your life with a new baby. Motherhood is tough and we want to offer items that deliver high style you want, with the helpful features you need.
We also want to ensure that each product is made to last - Our Stokke furniture for example, is all made of hardwood beech and is designed to grow with your child. (Their crib grows from bassinet, to crib, to toddler bed to youth bed.) We love that you can end up paying less for a well-made and beautifully designed piece that lasts for years, than if you bought the four low-cost particle board versions you would need for the same time period.

We pride ourselves on being a community shop. Knowledge of designers, gear, and sizing is part of that commitment to service. We love kids! Come into the shop to play with our toys (we have lots of floor models), try on slings with your baby, or nurse in our rockers and have a cup of tea.
Shopping with your kids can be fun again! We have lots to entertain little ones, stickers and balloons when needed for cheering up (Rachel is getting pretty good at balloon animals!) so don't hesitate to bring the gang. We also have lots of fun events for kids during the year like pirate party, fairy day and photo days.
